SPRING AND SUMMER 2007.04.24 (Posted by MASCOT MANNIE)

Dear Blog from Mascot Mannie.

Spring is here and Summer will be here shortly. I love these guys.

They remind me of renewal and growth after times of storms and tough cold weather. In the past season, I'm saddened that people have lost their lives all around the world.

These last months have been reflection time on how I'm living my life and how I can be better to others. It's been a lot of reflection rather than action. We did a lot of that last year and now it's thinking and meditation time.

For Spring and Summer, they can represent the new births and new tries at life. I can't say that I'm ready to give birth now but I'm ready to ride my bike, smell the fresh leaves and go swimming with my goggles and growing beard!

I'm also looking forward to doing more art as our sales are picking up specifically for our art pieces. This is a big way in how I let go of my emotions of how I'm feeling in life, whether sad or happy.

Busy also doing our website with SHEEP HEAD. We'll be updating our site more with blogs, random art paintings, prints, clothes, songs, videos and poetry by the whole team:

  • Mascot Mannie
  • Ninja Nate
  • Donut David (also special guests Rosie and Poopie the dogs)
  • Sheep Head

Anyways, sorry we haven't been keeping up due to our "resting" time. I look forward to enjoying ice water and running bare foot on grass with you this summer. For the time being, I'll be resting and getting ready.

I hope all of you are doing your push ups and singing (or rapping) in your hearts to doing the best with your life. See you hopefully soon.

DJ QBERT Update 2006.12.20 (Posted by BEN ILDAE LIM)

Ben Ildae Lim of
The Yummies
Greetings and Merry Christmas!
The Yummies crew firsthand wants to send a warm winter holiday greetings to all our friends and family. We hope that everyone gets to spend time with their love ones and exchange hugs and good hand shakes.

Well The Yummies got a hefty update that we like to report. We just got back from a trip to the Bay Area, (San Francisco, CA) a.k.a the DJ capitol of the world, also one the few places in North America where you can go cage diving with the Great White Shark.

We got the opportunity and the green light to come out by our good friends at Mixsterious. Mixsterious is a full out sound, visual, and entertainment entity. They specialize in DJ club events, to full out concert shows. The whole Mix. Crew is like a besieged army headed by Kendo, the army is fully equipped with headstrong DJ's, girls who wear t-shirts, promoters, secretaries, video productions, and to a full on conglomerate street team. There in the full mix right now of elevating their services to the next level.

That's how The Yummies come into the picture. We first initially be-freinded mastermind Kendo in Denver two years ago at DJ Qbert's show. By the way Kendo is also DJ Qbert's manager. Whenever they were touring in Denver he would invite us to come out Qbert's show and do our Mascot performance on stage. Through that simple action we slowly built up a cocoon with Kendo and allowed us to do more work with Mixsterious.

Through that invited us out to San Francisco to do a small mascot performance for their upcoming DJ Battle, "Spin the Battle". A game show style with elements of "Wheel of Fortune", for DJ's to battle other DJ's. Ray Young Chu of The Yummies, did the graphic design for the concert event, and designing limited edition trading cards! Featuring The Yummies, Scratchy Seal, DJ Qbert, Kendo, Thud Rumble, and Mixsterious. These cards come with fun stats, bio, and other miscellaneous decorous information. We will be releasing them to the public very soon, so be ready to snatch them up!

So the event came around and we got down with our Charlie Chaplin style performance. We danced on stage with sponge crowbars to very sharp plastic scissors. Mascot Mannie's summer fur was getting a little long so the trim did come in handy. Ninja Nate came out swinging hard with his ping-pong paddle slicing and dicing the air. The overall DJ Battle was a furious and humorous. The night hosted by the crude and silly Skratchy Seal. Not only the evening bring killer DJ's from all over the world, but the night also included dance battles and girls who walked on stage with big cardboards. The show was a success and we felt invigorated by being able to be part of it.

Melody here. She was so nice to us.

At our friends house. We look like a couple crack heads.

The Yummies crew from their on went into a sweatshop mode of painting a canvas mural for Mixsterious. We worked from night to morning getting a little taste of what if feels like to be a vampire that lives off mixed nuts and power drinks. Much love to Mixsterious for providing a mini heater and all the healthy snacks for fuel. We took 15 power naps in between the three of us and were cautious of brushing our teeth every 12 hours. The end result with the gracious help by Qbert's dad who is an amazing engineer / carpenter at the age of 82 helped us to frame a banging piece!

DO NUT Dance Prep

DO NUT Dance

During this whole ordeal of working all night, our minds did get a little loopey causing us to transform into weird creatures. The photo of the 4 characters in odd masks and beards are key moments where we let the moment be. We captured it on film and you can view it above.

The Yummies crew was able to also get a break from the urban jungle and was able to hit up the real jungle. We visited Golden Gate Park, and Sherman forest, offering a great amount of flora and fauna. I wasn't able to spot the Great Horned Owl or any satyr creatures but I did notice that the vegetation and the feel is lush with great ferns, to gigantic Red Wood Trees taking refuge. Fungi are ramped here, they grow all over the place, the infamous and Fly Agaric is home here! Being able to hike up a tree and to let the mind be free and at peace with nature was what I needed personally. It also allowed each member of The Yummies to smell the damp and refreshing outdoors. Slugs!

The Yangs.

L-R: Hannah, 8-Ball (World Test Tone Champion), Ben Ildae Lim, Ray Young Chu, DJ Deus (Spin the Battle Winner), Marvin Lee and of course DJ Qbert (World's Greatest Turntablist).

L-R: Tek Threat;  El-Dawg, Kendo (Mixsterious) and Rafik ( 5x World Dj Champ / 10x National DJ Champ from Germany).

We also got to enjoy couple evenings with our old school / new school friends allowing us to get a taste of the city. The pretentious and infamous Fishermen Wharf, Haight street, and the steep street hills. That's it. hahaha

Kevy Dee (Mixsterious) getting covered up by Mascot Mannie while sleeping.

Coming back we feel blessed for all the small details that were handed and accommodated for us out here in SF. The consortium parternship between The Yummies, and Mixsterious is going to continue on and hopefully develop into a Merit Theology. Like one of my favorite artist once said in his song Ritchie Valens, "Come on Lets Go" we got to do it. Sleep for 5 hours and work for 19 hours with 15 power naps!

Thank You to the WHOLE MIXSTERIOUS CREW!, Big Ups and Love to DJ QBERT for not only allowing us to stay at his place but also giving us amazing gifts from his home. Q gave me a space book that's 3-4 feet tall! Also a balloon pumper hahah that he signed for us check it out Qbert Signing below.

Also gratitude's to all the people who showed us massive love and support.

After reading this entry I'm sure the pictures will make a little more sense. But again it's you own interuptation. I'm out gots to go shovel my driveway. Cheers!

Merry Christmas!

MURAL WITH DEXTOR 2006.09.20 (Posted by RAY YOUNG CHU)

Ray Young Chu of
The Yummies

This is Dexter. We worked together on an afterschool graffiti mural program through Colorado Hip Hop Coalition. I taught him some basic graffiti styles, history and a little about art and business.

This was the first time he did a spray can mural. We finished it in one long day.

With his family after finishing up. Cousins on the left; myself, Dexter and his parents Tammy and Terry on the right. The funny pose.

Another serious one with the artists.

Funny one with the artists.

Over the past sessions, I got to know Dexter and find out he liked music and he did a lot of art. This is a performance of him doing an original song he wrote. I like how he got interupted by his grandma.

Still in high school and just getting out of incarceration, Dexter's dream is to pursue music. Besides some struggles he goes through in life, I hope Dexter pursues his dreams with what he loves and has a passion for. Here's another video performance with his raps.

The mural canvas will be on display at a jam that the Colorado Hip Hop Coalition is throwing at 12-6pm this Saturday.
1411 OGDEN STREET. SUITE 203. DENVER CO 80218
PH: 303 . 296 . 0966

Another one that is related to graffiti is an event we're helping out with:

The Yummies in collaboration with Kaffeine Buzz is helping with "The Quality of Life" DVD tour. It's a graffiti movie from San Francisco (including Dug One, King 157, Jor 1 and many others).

After showing the movie, we wanted to do a hip hop community thing. So we have DJ Thought / B-Money on the ones and twos; B-boys sessions (possibly GWT and Front Range Rockers); Mic Jones, Isolated Generation and other MCs; Jher, Path One, Markham Maes live painting. There will be raffle prizes from Indyink, The 400, Plastic Chapel and Brave New World Tattoo.

$5 = Screening of the movie = 8pm = All Ages
10 pm = 21+ > Hip Hop Party
High Dive on Broadway / Ellsworth.

Much Love.
Ray Young Chu.

STEVE IRWIN / STORE 2006.09.14 (Posted by BEN ILDAE LIM)

Ben Ildae Lim of
The Yummies

Greetings to all,

This is Ben Ildae Lim, from the almond eating art group, The Yummies. We've been busy more than ever and are happy to say that we are still smiling. First of the picture of myself holding a snapping turtle is a tribute to my hero Steve Irwin. Im sure everyone knows him as the Crocodile Hunter. He was my Jordan being enthusiast naturalist myself he was the role model. Butbut maybe its his pop that said it best, Steve would want to be remembered as an "ordinary bloke".

One simple thing I admired about was Steve was a man who lived life. He knew why he was on this green earth, and he did the things that he truly loved. One couldnt deny the fire and charisma this man oozed. The Yummies are eminent on doing what we love and to do the best. And its really a gift to have someone who has done that fully with love and joy. So Steve from this Yummie heart this Snapping Turtle is for you!

Other news, The Yummies have recently inquired their own Store and Gallery space!!! We have fresh new paintings, prints, apparel and a lot other goods. Now you can actually try on a t-shirt and smell a painting in real life before purchasing it! Ray and I are down at the stores Wednesday and Thursday we encourage you to bring a hot bowl of ramyun noodle and hang out with us. Its located on the heart of Colfax.

The exact address and store hours is:

3105 east Colfax ave.
Wen-Fri 1-6pm, Sat 12-6pm.

Hope to see yalls soon.

Hey Everyone,

These days, we're wanting to linger back and enjoy the simple things in life. It's been a busy year and we've done a lot of fun-packed things...but sometimes things get a little too hectic and complex so we're trying to go back to the basics.

Thus our next show and shirts entitled "Back to the Basics". Concentrating on the logo of: THE YUMMIES and motto: Art and Peanut Butter. What does it mean? What is peanut butter? Well, listen to the The Yummies Theme Song below. You could also learn how to play it with the lyrics!

YATTA 2006.07.25 (Posted by RAY YOUNG CHU)

The cover of the Yatta! CD single.

Ray Young Chu Here.

Random Ray

I went to a camp one time that they were doing an ice breaker and doing some introductions. So they had people introduce themselves with an adjective that started with the first letter of their name. I originally picked something unnecessarily cheesy like "Radical Ray" and then someone said "Random Ray" is your name! I agreed and ever since then I like to use this to introduce my name.

If you know me, you'll know I'm random and perhaps that is why The Yummies have a weird quarky feeling mixed with fruits and nuts.

Well, with this introduction, I'm happy to present one of the best music video I've seen in a long time. Although it is political, I rather enjoy the joyous feeling you get in the performance. With the facial expressions mixed with seemingly random statements, it is an inspiration to me. I hope you enjoy it and make you want to enjoy life and be thankful for what we do have. Thank you Gloria and Shaniqbooboo.

Ray of THE YUMMIES.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Yatta is a 2001 song by a Japanese comedy band called ???? (Happa-tai; literally "Leaf Squad" in Japanese, though they called themselves "Green Leaves" in English). The song was first performed as a sketch on the Japanese sketch comedy show "??????" (Warau Inu no Bo-ken; Adventures of a Laughing Dog), where Happa-tai, a sendup of a stereotypical boy band, is portrayed by some of Japan's most well-known comedians. It became extremely popular on the Internet through the distribution of its music video and also a Flash animation called Irrational Exuberance which used the song (this was a so-called animutation).

The video features its members singing in a mixture of Japanese and English, and dancing exuberantly while wearing only underwear with a large green leaf on the front. The word yatta literally means "We did it" but an equivalent exclamation in English might be "All right!" The song is in the style of an upbeat, motivational pop song, mimicking the style of Japanese corporate anthems, and the six band members' synchronized dancing and personalized poses for the camera parody the boy band craze.

The sketch appears to be at least partly ironic commentary on attempts by the Japanese government and others to maintain optimism in the face of Japan's severe economic troubles, depicting men impoverished to the degree of having no clothing but the figurative fig leaf (though in this case the leaves are attached to tighty whiteys) yet maintaining an irrational, irrepressible belief in their own potential for success. The sketch satirizes many of the stereotypes of Japanese pop culture, including such tropes as a romantic interlude during the song's bridge that takes place on a city street filled with floating sakura blossoms.

On April 18, 2001, the Yatta! single was released under the Pony Canyon label in Japan. It surprisingly hit #6 in the charts, and went triple-platinum in Japan within a number of weeks. While the song was intended to be humorous, the Internet audience in the United States generally assumed it to be earnest, probably due to the obvious work that went into the special effects in the video. The incomprehensibility of such an elaborate video enhanced its popularity among Western audiences who could not understand the Japanese lyrics.

The song and video have since been used as a web culture in-joke on many different websites, akin to All your base are belong to us, and the amount of independent video of various kinds that has referenced or used it is quite prolific. The actors who performed as Happa-tai were even brought to perform "YATTA!" in the United States on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Host Jimmy Kimmel compared himself to Ed Sullivan introducing the Beatles in their first American performance.

LIFE 2006.06.20 (Posted by RAY YOUNG CHU)

The Yummies

Seonna Hong (click above for bigger picture).

TOBY DAWSON (click above for videos and info on this Olympic Winner).

This is Ray Young Chu from The Yummies. Hello again.

I've titled this news update "Life".

We got some exciting things going on in the next couple of weeks. We'll be having a Birthday Party for THE YUMMIES this Thursday. We're two years old! Both founder Ben Ildae Lim (3rd) and myself (26th) have our birthdays in June as well. Come out and celebrate life with us.

We'll be also speaking at Korean Heritage Camp and Self Made. Self Made is an artist talk held at Double Daughters (where we still have a show up this month). Korean Heritage Camp is this summer camp for adopted Koreans to learn about their heritage as Korean Americans.

Seonna Hong and Toby Dawson are some of the people that will be there this year.

SEONNA HONG

Seonna Hong is a great artist who's background is illustration and she does animation. She's worked on Dexter's Labratory and in 2004 she was nominated for an Annie Award and won an Emmy Award for her background animation on "My Life as a Teenage Robot," the acclaimed Nickelodeon show. Additionally, Hong has been featured in the New York Times The New York Sun, Gallery Guide (cover), Giant Robot (cover), Art + Auction, Portland Mercury (cover), Res Magazine, Art Prostitute, as well as the books The Truth Show, Beatsville, and Sci-Fi Western. (Taken from Six Space)

She's also married to acclaimed artist Tim Biskup.

TOBY DAWSON

Young Toby's adjustment to life in America wasn't easy. He didn't speak English when he first arrived, and Deborah recalls that he screamed out in his sleep nearly every night for a year. Growing up in the U.S., Dawson would go to a three- or four-day camp during the summer for adopted children from South Korea and other Asian countries. He now volunteers at the heritage camp every year, trying to help kids who are going through what he experienced. "It's a special experience because it is all adopted kids and everyone forms this close bond with each other that is unexplainable, just because we've all kind of gone through the same situation," he says. "We've all had the heartache, all of the things that are involved with being adopted, for one, and being a minority, for two."
(Taken from NBC Olympics)

We're really excited to meet everyone there, help and learn as well. We'll be speaking about culture, graffiti and the philosophies of The Yummies. At Self Made, we'll talk about
what The Yummies do. Both will feature founder Ben Ildae Lim.

Got a couple more events coming up, just check our show list. Also got some secret things in the works but we'll post you up on details later.

Last but not least, I wanted to end off with a movie. As life is full of challenges, I'm proud to present a film made by Ben Ildae Lim and written by our friend Clifton Smith about the challenges of life and deep friendships. Check it out below, It's called "That Place".

Click above to see the movie.

I'll talk to you all later. Enjoy life and give.

THE YUMMIES / RAY YOUNG CHU Shows 2006.05.31 (Posted by RAY YOUNG CHU)

This is Ray Young Chu from The Yummies. Hello.

Shows:

I wanted to let you all know of some shows in which we'll be showing our paintings and prints in Denver. Two shows same night. We'll be at the Fakture one earlier on and then at Double Daughter's later.

New and old paintings. For those outside, we should be posting up picts.

Decks:
We will have skate boards at 303 Boards available next month. They should be part of a series of limited edition boards.

Kid Koala:

Got to hang out with Kid Koala when he came out to Denver. Although a couple people booed us; Koala liked us and encouraged us to grow in our performances and art. "People will remember 10% auditory of a performance but will remember visually 90%." (Ray's paraphrased version of Kid Koala quoted Money Mark).
